RAID1 employs 2 identical drives which mirror each other. If either of these two drives fail, the other one will have a mirror of the data for real-time failover (no downtime). RAID5 employs 3 identical drives and provides data striping at the byte level and also stripe error correction information. This results in excellent performance and good fault tolerance.
