Short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. This allows your server to stay online even if one drive fails (or in some cases two drives fail)

What is the difference between RAID1 and RAID5?

RAID1 employs 2 identical drives which mirror each other. If either of these two drives fail, the other one will have a mirror of the data for real-time failover (no downtime).

RAID5 employs 3 identical drives and provides data striping at the byte level and also stripe error correction information. This results in excellent performance and good fault tolerance.

In summary, RAID1 provides protection against a drive failing while RAID5 provides faster read/write speeds as well as protection against a drive failing.

Most other RAID configurations are available for our dedicated server solutions, but please contact sales@ascenthosting.com for details and pricing befor placing your order.
