What is Fully Managed?

In the Web hosting industry, the definition of Fully Managed varies from provider to provider. If you ask ten different providers, you will likely receive ten different answers.

Because of this, at Ascent we very clearly document what we consider to be fully managed. First, we don't provide different levels of management, this is because all of our servers are Fully Managed.

Provided below is our definition of fully managed. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask in this forum.

Hardware Administration

We closely monitor all customer hardware to pro-actively identify and resolve any hardware issues in order to provide the highest possible levels of uptime and performance.

We have physical access to all servers managed by Ascent, and have spare equipment on hand in order to perform quick replacements on bad hardware if neccessary.

Ascent uses only quality hardware in all our dedicated, VPS and shared servers. Each server is built with Supermicro hardware and are properly cooled server-quality rackmounted servers.

Software Administration

We will do the complete installation and configuration of your server from start to finish. This includes configuring everything needed to start populating the server with your customers and web sites, including the configuration of cPanel, nightly backups (onto second hard drive), and all other neccessary software.

We will pro-actively apply security patches to your server as neccessary only after communicating with you to arrange a convenient time. We closely monitor all aspects of the server in order to ensure the highest possible uptime, as well to provide you valuable insight on your server's performance.

(Please note: this is a duplicate of the main FAQ available via the menu in the left hand sidebar, included here for completeness.)

How long will it take for my account to be set up?

Your account will usually be set up within a maximum of six hours of order placement and payment during business hours (our time which is Australian Eastern Standard Time), and usually less than that. Setup time outside business hours generally occurs within a similar timeframe.

Can I move my web site to Ascent from my existing host with minimal disruption to its availability?

If your existing host provides you with CPanel and the ability to create backups of your home directory, then the process can be very quick indeed, with minimal disruption to your web site’s availability.

Even if you don’t currently use CPanel, with a little pre-planning you can minimse disruption to the just the time it takes to upload your files and re-delegate your domain to our server. Simply download your site files to your local machine from your existing hosting account, so they are ready to upload to your new account via FTP as soon as it is set up. Then go to your domain registrar, log in and change your DNS settings to point to our nameservers (full details will be provided in your welcome email).

Your new details should update (propogate) across the Internet within 72 hours. That’s it.

We recommend that you don’t close your account with your current host until your domain’s new details are fully delegated so as to minimise any disruptions to your service. Generally around 7 days is sufficient/advisable for this purpose.

Does Ascent maintain backups of my site files?

Ascent is one of the few shared hosting providers we know of offering THREE levels of backup.

1. Your server is RAID mirrored, meaning it has three high performance hard drives not just one. When data like your web site’s html files, emails and databases is saved to the hard drive it is written (mirrored) to all three drives simultaneously. This insures you against hard drive failure.

2) Your server also has a (fourth) 400 GB hard drive, to which your data is backed up nightly. This is an on-site backup.

3) Weekly backups are encrypted and then sent to our secure, offsite Network Attached Storage Service, which for security and safety is located in a datacentre in another state entirely.

So three levels of security will give you complete peace of mind is safe and secure. It’s what helps make us such a reliable host. Does your existing host provide this level of service?

It is still your responsibility to maintain your own backups and store them off-site (such as your local machine) as we cannot guarantee the 100% integrity of backups.

We offer plenty of tutorials, the knowledgebase and support forums are available here on site to help you with this and many other tasks.

Does Ascent offer a choice of billing cycle?

Yes. You can choose to pay for your account monthly or annually.

Does Ascent require me to sign up for a minimum period?

No, you can pay monthly. In addition we offer a pro-rated 30 day money back guarantee.

What forms of payment does Ascent accept?

Plans can be purchased with a credit card, we also accept payment via Paypal.

Direct deposit is also available. Details required to make a direct transfer payment are contained in our invoice, which will be sent to you via email upon completion of signup.

What is PayPal? Is it a safe and secure way to make purchases online?

PayPal, the trusted leader in online payments, enables buyers and businesses to send and receive money online. PayPal has over 96 million member accounts in 55 countries and regions. It’s accepted by merchants everywhere, both on and off eBay.

PayPal helps protect your credit card information with industry-leading security and fraud prevention systems. When you use PayPal, your financial information is never shared with the merchant. That means Ascent Hosting neither sees nor stores your sensitive information.

Paypal is a free, convenient way to make purchases or send money. PayPal is accepted by millions of businesses worldwide and is the preferred payment method on eBay.

What is Ascent Hosting’s support procedure?

To receive support, please follow our procedure via the following steps -

(1). Search the Knowledge Base and Support area’s of the forums for articles, tutorials or Flash video walk-throughs.

(2). Then search through the entire forum database.

(3). If you can’t find your solution, post your question into the Support forum.

(4). If your support question is password sensitive or sensitive in general, please use our helpdesk at here.

If you post a question into the Support Forum, be sure to let us know which server you’re on too. It’s difficult to match up client details to forum usernames at times.

We ask you to post non-sensitive support requests in the Support forum rather privately via the help desk because the sharing of questions, answers, tips and tricks between all Ascent members will make everyone’s experience here a richer one. Sharing knowledge clearly benefits everyone.

We monitor all forums closely and respond speedily to your questions no matter where they are posted - public or private. Of course, you are not obliged to post your question publicly if you choose not to - you are always welcome to use the helpdesk rather than the forums.

For support, please don’t send personal messages [PM], or emails directly to Ascent staff. The PM feature is not for technical support. Any support messages received by PM box or email, are just replied with a friendly - “Please use the Helpdesk or Support Forum response.

All support that is not password sensitive or sensitive in any other way, should be posted into the “Support forum for the betterment of the Ascent community.

New topic: “Welcome to our Forums” by admin

Welcome to our new forums and thank you for seeking out more information about our web hosting services.

Ascent Hosting is a privately owned web hosting business conceived and born out of my need to provide quality, business-class web hosting services at an affordable price for clients of Flip Interactive, Ascent's sister web design agency.

Like many web site owners, I was frustrated by my experience over a period of five years of failing to find a solid, focussed web host we could partner with for the longer term with confidence. Either the price was good, but support, uptime, reliability and features were lacking, or the support was good (rarely great), but at considerable cost to the provider's price-competitiveness.

So the key idea behind Ascent Hosting was to create the kind of web hosting business that I would want to be a customer of were I looking for business-class hosting. What does that mean for prospective clients of Ascent?

Firstly, Ascent is NOT a web host that offers cheap plans with huge disk space and bandwidth allowances. We don't do budget hosting. The web hosting industry today (2006) is saturated with such hosts, and their failure rate and client turnover rate is frightening. In the short-term, such operators succeed simply because of a basic lack of consumer knowledge of the hosting industry. In the long-run, this approach is not viable.

Worse, short-term business models generally means life for their customers is often very uncertain and stressful. Not a recipe for a quality business partnership.

Secondly, we are in it for the long-term, and this mindset ensures we stay focussed on growing by investing in the future through premium-grade equipment and high quality support. We will always ensure customer support is our highest priority.

So how is Ascent different? Basically, we have set out to distinguish ourselves in the business hosting marketplace in three main ways. Being a business-class web host means:

1. We offer you a premium web hosting service - with standard features many hosts don't even offer as for-cost optional extras. Your site runs on premium hardware, is served across premium bandwidth (provided by multiple bandwidth providers), and is protected by multiple levels of redundancy and backup built into all layers of our network operations.

2. In order to remain a strong viable business and stable, long-term partner for our clients we are clear and upfront that we will always charge realistic prices for our services. We don't discount or loss-lead. I see this as just basic business realism, and ultimately in the interests of both us and our clients over the longer term (there's that phrase again).

3. Ascent is a service business, not a technology business. So communication is a core focus. You will see that fact reflected in the quality and timeliness of our various client communications and support channels like the forums, tutorials, knowledgebase and heldesk on our web site, in the speed of our responses to helpdesk tickets and client inquiries, and in our planning as we roll out new services and upgrades to our network that improve our clients hosting experience.

These are the main ways we aim to be a better kind of web hosting provider for our clients.

Well, enough from me, over to you. I hope you find what you are looking for here at Ascent Hosting.

Don't hesistate to contact us or post a question in the "Your Questions" forum if you can't find answers to your questions here on our site.

Yours sincerely

Rob Phelan

If we determine that any site on our servers is using too much of the server's resources and therefore abusing the server, we have the right to suspend that domain without any notice. It is then up to you to contact us and formulate a plan to get that domain activated again. We are quick to suspend any domain that abuses the server's resources due to the shared nature of the server and the negative impact an abusing domain has on other domains on the same server.

No mass email marketing or free email businesses allowed!!

We do not allow mass email marketing sites on our servers. It doesn't matter if it's opt_in email marketing. We simply do not allow sites of that nature to be hosted on this shared environment. Sites such as "safe lists" and "free email" are also strictly prohibited. We reserve the right to shutdown such sites, that we consider harmful to the server's performance.

SPAM Policy -

Ascent Hosting Co. is committed to a zero-tolerance, anti-Spamming policy. We react quickly and seriously to violations, and we further reserve the right to terminate the services, without prior notice, of any customer disregarding this policy. Sending unsolicited commercial email (a.k.a. "spam"), cross-posting messages to a large number of Usenet groups, posting obscene or threatening messages while using or referring to an Ascent Hosting Co. email address or web site URL is prohibited. The use of Ascent Hosting Co. servers as a mail drop for responses to activities described above is also prohibited.

If your Ascent account is involved in spamming activities, and your account is subsequently terminated, then you do not have the right for a refund. This also includes if you have paid for additional services, such as installations of software or IP addresses.

No Free Trial accounts allowed -

We forbid the use of our resources to supply free hosting or free email services. These Free Trials and free accounts [subdomain or otherwise] open up the servers to severe abuse from hackers and spammers. If we find a customer who is offerring Free Trial accounts, or free hosting, we will suspend that account. We take this very seriously and there are no exceptions to this rule.

Full backups are made nightly. No guarantees are made of any kind, either expressed or implied, as to the integrity of these backups. Backups are made for server restoration purposes only. It is the client's responsibility to maintain backups via their CPanel Backup Manager and local copies of their web content.

The "Backup Manager" is included in each hosting plan and client can use this tool to back up their files. If loss of data occurs due to an error of Ascent Hosting Co., we will attempt to recover the date for no charge to the client. If data loss occurs due to negligence of client in securing their account or by an action of the client, Ascent Hosting Co. will attempt to recover the data from the most recent archive for a $50.00 fee.

Support Policy -

It is the client's responsibility to have a good working knowledge of aspects of their site's operation. Please do not expect the Ascent Hosting Co. support staff to teach you how to use aspects of the tools at your disposal. You can post questions like this into the General discussion area of the forum and interact with other Ascent Hosting Co. members for help etc.
